What this site is
Hausa Daily News publishes background explainers about northern Nigeria — how the systems work, what the rules say, and what the published data shows.
We cover five subjects: politics and government, the economy, security, education and health.
What we are not
We are not a breaking news service. We do not report events as they happen, we do not have reporters at incidents, and we do not publish eyewitness accounts. If you want to know what happened this morning, read a newsroom with correspondents on the ground.
What we do instead is explain the thing behind the headline. When a news report says the MPC cut the rate to 23%, we are the site that explains what the MPR is, who sets it, and what it does to the cost of a loan.
How we work
We write from sources, and we show them. Every article ends with a list of the sources it draws on, linked so that you can check them yourself. We prioritise official sources — the Central Bank, the National Bureau of Statistics, INEC, JAMB, NCDC, the courts — over secondary reporting, and secondary reporting over commentary.
We date everything. Every article carries the date its facts were checked. Nigerian figures move quickly, and an undated figure is close to useless.
We say when we do not know. Where we could not verify something — because an official document was unreadable, or two credible sources disagreed, or no primary source existed — we say so in the article and leave the gap open. You will find several examples across the site: exam fees we would not quote, a vaccination schedule we would not publish, casualty figures we would not extrapolate.
This is the part we would ask you to judge us on. It is easy to publish a confident number. It is more useful to publish an honest gap.
We write plainly. No jargon where a normal word will do, and no assumed knowledge.
On contested subjects
Some of what we cover is genuinely contested — state police, the almajiri system, farmer–herder conflict, Sharia courts. On those, we set out what the law says, what the data shows, and the strongest version of each side's argument. We do not tell you what to conclude.
We do not attribute violence to ethnic or religious groups. We describe documented drivers and we cite the research.
How this site is funded
Advertising. Advertisements are selected and served by third-party networks, principally Google. We do not choose individual advertisements and we do not endorse them.
We do not take payment for coverage, we do not publish sponsored articles disguised as explainers, and no advertiser has any say in what we write.
